Stability ball workouts are being used in every gym and many homes now. The term stability ball refers to exercise ball, Swiss ball, Pilates ball, and so on. So many names for the same thing. Why Stability? Well this is probably the most UNstable piece of fitness equipment, it therefore refers to the stability of the user.
In order to use an exercise ball effectively you must first learn to balance firmly on it. Because of this need to balance all the exercises become so much better. They have to be performed carefully. This definitely helps the muscles at the centre of things such as the abs. It is also necessary to place the feet or hands in the proper position to hold the balance.
If you take any exercise that you would normally perform on a mat and adapt it to the fitness ball you will get so much more value from it. Instead of exercises being jerky and slapdash I find that people naturally perform them in a much smoother and more even manner. This in itself is a great improvement. Where I had difficulty getting people in my sessions to take their time and feel the force of their actions, I find that implementing stability ball workouts means that this more careful movement comes much more naturally to them.
You can get used to the way an exercise ball behaves by using it to sit on whilst watching television. When you do this you will find yourself using it in a very natural manner. Most people who use them vow never to go back to using the floor alone.
